This is a list of the world's sovereign states and their dependent territories by total area, including the entities listed on the ISO standard ISO 3166-1. The figures represent total areas, covering land and inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Some entries may also include marine internal waters (coastal waters). Territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones are not included. The total land area of the world is 148,940,000 km2 (57,510,000 sq mi),[1] about 29.1% of the Earth's surface area.

All generally recognised sovereign states are on this list. Territories that are not integral, such as dependent territories, are listed separately (in italics) or noted as included. Not included in the list are uninhabited dependent territories, such as various countries' claims to parts of the continent of Antarctica[Note 1] (14,400,000 km2 (5,600,000 sq mi)*) – and entities such as the European Union[Note 2] (4,324,782 km2 (1,669,808 sq mi)* total area) that have some degree of sovereignty but do not consider themselves to be sovereign countries or dependent territories. States with limited recognition that are not listed in the ISO standard ISO 3166-1 are not included, but are noted within the countries they are recognised as part of with areas given.

  1. The following countries have territorial claims in Antarctica: Argentina (969,000 km2 (374,000 sq mi)*), Australia (5,896,500 km2 (2,276,700 sq mi)*), Chile (1,250,000 km2 (480,000 sq mi)*), France (432,000 km2 (167,000 sq mi)*), New Zealand (450,000 km2 (170,000 sq mi)*), Norway (2,500,000 km2 (970,000 sq mi)*) and United Kingdom (1,395,000 km2 (539,000 sq mi)*), which to some extent overlap. The area from 90°W to 150°W (2,100,000 km2 (810,000 sq mi)*) is currently unclaimed territory. These areas usually have no human inhabitants, excluding scientists.
  2. The European Union is a sui generis supranational union. It covers a total area of 4,324,782 km2 (1,669,808 sq mi) and would be ranked 7th if it were included (3.0% of world's total land area).

Entries in this table giving figures other than the figures given in this source are explained in the associated Note.
  4. 4.0 4.1 There are two reasons for the dispute in rankings between the United States and China. The first reason is the U.N. figure for China's total area, 9,596,961 km2 (3,705,407 sq mi) does not include disputed territories in China's possession.[citation needed] If the territories of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract, which are controlled by China but claimed by India, were added to the current UN figure for China, China's total area would be 9,640,011 km2 (3,722,029 sq mi).[citation needed] Using this figure, the area of China would be greater than the U.N. figure for the area of the United States,9,629,091 km2 (3,717,813 sq mi). The second reason relates to how "total area" is calculated. The figure given for the United States additionally includes coastal waters, while the figure for China does not.[citation needed] The inclusion of coastal waters is the calculation method used by the CIA World Factbook, whereas the latter is the method employed by Encyclopædia Britannica, reaching differing conclusions.
  5. The area given is the United Nations official figure for China, 9,596,961km2 (3,705,407 sq mi)[2] excludes Taiwan and other islands of the Republic of China;[2] territories in dispute with India (Aksai Chin, Trans-Karakoram Tract, Arunachal Pradesh); coastal and territorial waters. Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract are controlled by China and claimed by India, whereas Arunachal Pradesh is controlled by India and claimed by China. The total area of China is listed as 9,572,900 km2 (3,696,100 sq mi) by the Encyclopædia Britannica, which is slightly larger than that of the United States[3] See territorial changes and land reclamations of P.R. China
  6. The area given is the United Nations official figure which includes coastal waters.[citation needed] The total area of the United States is listed as 9,826,675 km2 (3,794,100 sq mi) by the CIA World Factbook which further includes territorial waters.[4][citation needed] [5] The total area of the United States is listed as 9,522,055 km2 (3,676,486 sq mi) by the Encyclopædia Britannica, which is slightly less than that of China.[6]
  7. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the figure of 7,692,024 km2 (2,969,907 sq mi) includes the statistical entity known as "Other territories", which is defined in the Census Dictionary as consisting of the Jervis Bay Territory, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Christmas Island.
  8. Includes the territories of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (14 km2 (5.4 sq mi)*) and Christmas Island (135 km2 (52 sq mi)*).[Note 7] Excludes the external territories of Norfolk Island (36 km2 (14 sq mi)*), Ashmore and Cartier Islands (5 km2 (1.9 sq mi)*), Coral Sea Islands Territory (0.91 km2 (0.35 sq mi)*), and Heard and McDonald Islands (372 km2 (144 sq mi)*). Excludes the claim of the Australian Antarctic Territory (5,896,500 km2 (2,276,700 sq mi)*).
  9. The area given is the United Nations official figure. If Indian Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh which are claimed by Pakistan and China respectively, the area would be 3,201,446 km2 (1,236,085 sq mi), 2.1% of the total.[7]
  10. Does not include claims on the Falkland Islands (12,200 km2 (4,700 sq mi)*), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and on Antarctica (969,000 km2 (374,000 sq mi)*).
  11. Does not include claims on Clipperton Island (Spanish: [Isla de la Pasión] error: {{lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) 8.9 square kilometres (3.4 sq mi).
  12. Following the split of South Sudan in July 2011, Sudan drops to 16th place (1,886,068 km2 (728,215 sq mi)*), with the new Republic of South Sudan appearing at 45th place (619,745 km2 (239,285 sq mi)*).
  13. The area given is the area as tabulated by the CIA World Factbook.[11] The UN Demographic Yearbook lists a figure of 1,628,750 km², which refers to land area only.
  14. The United Nations area figure excludes data for territories of Jammu and Kashmir that are disputed with India. This region consists of the territories of Azad Kashmir (13,297 km2 (5,134 sq mi)*) and Gilgit-Baltistan (72,520 km2 (28,000 sq mi)*).[12] Including these territories would produce an area figure of 881,912 km2 (340,508 sq mi).
  15. The French Republic includes French overseas territories and, using data from the UN source, has a total area of 640,294 km2 (247,219 sq mi)*, excluding French Southern and Antarctic Lands totaling (432,000 km2 (167,000 sq mi)*).
The UN source reports 551,500 square kilometres (212,900 sq mi)* as the geographic European area of France, and separately reports the areas of overseas departments of French Guiana (83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi)*); Guadeloupe (1,628 km2 (629 sq mi)*); Martinique (1,128 km2 (436 sq mi)*); and Réunion (2,504 km2 (967 sq mi)*). The areas of these overseas departments total (88,794 km2 (34,284 sq mi)*), and adding that to the geographic European area brings the total area for the French Republic to (640,294 km2 (247,219 sq mi)*).
Another source, the French National Institute for Statistice and Economic Studies, gives an area figure of (632,759 km2 (244,310 sq mi)*) as the area of Metropolitan France and overseas departments.[13]
  16. The UN area figure includes the largely unrecognized  Somaliland, which has an area of 137,600 km2 (53,100 sq mi) and is de facto independent from Somalia.
  17. Includes Spanish possessions on or near the coast of Africa (Ceuta, Melilla, Plazas de soberanía).
  18. Does not include the disputed southern Kuril Islands.
  19. Includes Åland Islands (1,552 km2 (599 sq mi)*).
  20. The UN data includes mainland Norway only, and does not include the integral overseas areas of Svalbard and Jan Mayen (62,422 km2 (24,101 sq mi)*) and the dependency of Bouvet Island (49 km2 (19 sq mi)*) and the Antarctic dependency claims of Queen Maud Land (2,500,000 km2 (970,000 sq mi)*) and Peter I Island (243 km2 (94 sq mi)*).

  23. Administration is split between Morocco and the partially recognised, de facto independent  Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, both of which claim the entire territory.
  24. Does not include the three Crown Dependencies (768 km2 (297 sq mi)*) and the 14 British overseas territories (1,742,857 km2 (672,921 sq mi)*).
  25. The UN area figure includes  Republic of Kosovo, which has an area of 10,887 km2 (4,203 sq mi)[19] and has declared independence. The area of Serbia without Kosovo is 77,474 km2 (29,913 sq mi).[20]
